Mortality and morbidity estimates for influenza infection in Asia-Pacific countries
Session 2. Why should influenza be a public health priority?Influenza viruses cause disease in all age groups, and severe disease particularly in the extremes of age. I reviewed studies that reported population-based estimates of influenza-associated hospitalizations and excess mortality. To allow comparison with other countries, rates were directly standardized to the World Standard Population. There was heterogeneity in age-standardized excess all-cause mortality rates based on reports from various Asia-Pacific countries, with age-standardized estimates between 5 and 8 deaths per 100,000 persons per year. The burden of influenza is substantial in Asia Pacific countries, although most data come from a small number of locations. Further studies are needed to characterize more fully the burden of influenza in Asia Pacific countries.postprin

Breast cancer incidence and mortality in a transitioning Chinese population: current and future trends
Parallel Session 1 - Population Health & Policy: no. S3Conference Theme: Translating Health Research into Policy and Practice for Health of the PopulationBACKGROUND: Projections of future trends in cancer incidence and mortality are important for public health planning. Moreover, as the most economically developed city in China, Hong Kong may provide a sentinel for a substantial proportion of the global population. OBJECTIVES: To model and evaluate recent trends in breast cancer incidence and mortality in Hong Kong, and to project the trends on short to medium terms, which have significant implications on future burdens on our health care …published_or_final_versio
